Ion Dissonance: Cursed

28/10/10  ||  Trauma

It’s always nice when the music sounds like the band name implies. Well, lemme clarify that statement. It’s nice due to the fact that I can’t say I’m surprised when I hear what they sound like. Ion fucken Dissonance. There is a lot of dissonant riffing going on in this platter of tunes. I’m certainly glad I’m listening to this on my laptop and not in concert because the guitars would make me go insane in a live setting. I don’t mean “insane” in a good way.

None of the music is without its merits, though. What I can definitely do without is the crunchcrunchweedlyweedly-type riffing that is becoming so overused and you will hear it in this album. Lots of stuff is overdone in music, yeah, but this shit gets old way faster. Also I must say that if you are annoyed by “core”-ish riffage (I shan’t explain further) you might want to go into a listening session with this group and/or album with basted broccoli or whatever that saying is. And holy shit, what is with your exceedingly long song titles? I should knock off a point or two for having to take so long to type these things out. I’m lazy, this is the Internet age, and I don’t like that I have to type out such long titles. Ass. Holes. Just kidding, I love you half-way.

I’m not much familiar with this bands history but they are lumped in with “mathcore” and “deathcore” styles of music. I definitely hear that stuff in great amounts but they obviously are trying to incorporate a few different sounds into that insanely unpalatable mix of styles to make it less annoying.

For me, though – and this is the most important part – they just don’t rise above the rest. I can commend you guys for an effort, but that effort is just falling short. Getting “core” on everyone’s ass might get you some face time with the big magazines and whatever, but it won’t get you much recognition outside of that. Because when all is said and done you’re no better than that band 5 years ago that released almost the same album. Maybe this is a unique gem in the core-world, I don’t know since I’m stuck in Elton John-land, but if I was asked to choose and album that I sincerely wanted to listen to I would not even think of this one.

You’re Canadian and you play metal, but Gorguts you guys ain’t.
